Amazon Prime’s The Boys is in its final season. The R-rated superhero satire will follow its previous eight-captivating-episode format for its fifth and final season.
The much-anticipated show has been garnering praise worldwide for its thrilling action, dark humor, and sharp critique of power, characters, and corporate influence. Season 5 is filled with a star-studded cast and characters and is approaching a dramatic conclusion.
The immense success of The Boys has not only redefined the genre but has even brought lots of queries regarding the cost and the budget of the worldwide acclaimed show.
Prime’s Most Expensive Series
When Amazon Studios acquired the rights for The Boys from Cinemax back in November 2017, the studio committed to run the show for at least five seasons. The first season became one of Amazon Prime’s one of the most expensive series, where they spent an estimated budget of $11.2 million per episode, according to BuzzFeed.
With eight episodes per season, it is estimated to have cost up to $89.6 million during the production of the first season. Speaking to Business Insider in 2019, the show producer Eric Kripke said:
“We didn’t have anything close to a ‘Game of Thrones’ budget or anything like that. We’re not even half of what that number would be. But when you don’t have all the money in the world, you get there through blood and tears.”
Kirke also affirmed that The Boys was beyond the budget for Cinemax. That’s when Amazon Studios stepped in, and the production of the show was greenlit as Amazon’s first series programming initiative.
While the budget of the second, third, and fourth seasons is yet to be known, it’s expected to have cost more than their first season, given the popularity of the series.
Transition From Movie To Series
Initially, The Boys was expected to be an anti-superhero movie with Adam McKay as a director with Columbia Pictures. McKay even described it as a $100 million movie. It didn’t go as planned with Paramount Pictures stepping in August 2012, but the movie was canceled in 2016.
The movie was then decided to be turned into a series by Cinemax, with Eric Kripke joining as a showrunner, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen as co-creators. Later, Amazon Studios came to the rescue when Cinemax decided not to continue with the show further.
The jump of Amazon to original television shows through Amazon Prime Video turned out to be fruitful. The first season became an instant hit with positive reviews, and the series was even lauded as one of the best Amazon Prime Video series.
It’s now on the fifth and final season, adhering to Kirke’s vision and execution to be the five-season series, according to Vernon Sanders’ interview with The Warp.
What About The Budget Of Season 5?
The success of The Boys definitely brings the questions further, just how much Amazon’s going to spend on the production of their final season.
The conversations around the episodes and the runtime attracted the traction on social media when one of the sources revealed that Season 5 alone has an estimated budget of whooping $50 to $60 million per episode. The showrunner, Eric Kripke, responded to the rumors on X, affirming that such was not the case.
While we have yet to get the clear picture on the budget for Season 5 of Amazon’s The Boys, the superhero satire is expected to be the darkest and most intense one yet. It will be released worldwide on April 8, 2026.
