If you have embarked on the spooky adventure of the 2024 movie Monster Summer, Mason Thames needs little to no introduction at all. He plays Noah Reed, starring alongside Academy Award-winning actor Mel Gibson, Lorraine Bracco as Miss Halverson, Nora Zehetner, and Gary Weeks.
The thriller movie revolves around Thames as one of the young protagonists, who seeks help from an aging detective (Gibson) to unravel the mystery surrounding Martha’s Vineyard.
The teenage heartthrob is no stranger to acting in horror hits. In fact, his breakout role came as Finney Blake in 2021 from The Black Phone, starring opposite Ethan Hawke and Madeleine McGraw.
To no one’s surprise, he reprised the role as Finney in 2025, Black Phone 2 as the only known survivor of Grabber’s (played by Hawke) perilous deeds.
The sequel of 2021 horror gem saw Finney with his younger sister, Gwen (played by McGraw), investigating the mystery behind the first victims of Grabber.
His Hollywood Portfolio Marks Diversified Role
From being cast to horror hits to the cult-classic fantasy-adventure How to Train Your Dragon (2025), Thames journey of stardom in the Hollywood industry is indeed an interesting tale.
Talking about the shift of his role in movie genres, he spoke with Teen Vogue in November 2025:
After [The Black Phone,] it set a tone for a more serious route. Then I got [How to Train Your Dragon,] and I didn’t want to get typecast as Hiccup, which wouldn’t be a bad thing because that character means everything to me. But I also wanted to establish myself as an actor beyond that, to take on diverse roles, show range, and check off some bucket-list movies along the way.
The diversified role is just the tip of the iceberg of his budding acting talent in Hollywood. It all began in 2017, when Thames played Liam in the short film After Omelas; he was just 10 years old at the time.
Afterwards, in 2019, he appeared in the three episodes of the first season of Apple TV’s sci-fi drama For All Mankind, portraying Daniel Stevens. He then made a cameo appearance in the TV Series Evel as Robbie and even starred as Benj Nielsen in a raunchy comedy movie Incoming in 2024.
Not only that, but Thames played Miller Adams in the romance drama Regretting You (2025). He appeared alongside McKenna Grace. It came as a surprise for many since we got to see the shift of his role from the intense horror Black Phone 2 to the romantic movie in 2025.
With such diversified roles, he is now set to appear in the upcoming sci-fi comedy The Shitheads in 2026 and the sequel to the classic fantasy How to Train Your Dragon 2 in 2027.
Here’s another surprise for you: not only is he a talented actor, but also a professional dancer.
His Love Towards Professional Ballet
Before entering the acting industry, Thames studied ballet. According to his official website, his love of performing arts started at a young age. He was the youngest cast member to perform with a professional International ballet company.
He toured with the professional ballet company for four years, from 2013 to 2016. During that time, he performed in The Nutcracker as a dancer. The two-act classical ballet by the legendary Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was composed way back in 1892 and has been adapted by many ballet companies since the late 1960s.
